Dietary supplements are not medicines but foods in the legal sense. They should only be used when they provide targeted nutrients, minerals, vitamins, trace elements or micronutrients that are not consumed in sufficient quantities through a normal diet.
Dietary supplements are therefore particularly useful in situations where the need for certain nutrients increases: during pregnancy, with a vegan diet, with limited food choices, under high stress or during sport. The basic logic remains the same: first stabilise a balanced diet, then supplement in a targeted way – not everything on speculation.
The body needs certain nutrients for important functions such as energy metabolism, nervous system function, muscle function, immune defence, skin, hair and nails. When these nutrients are not consumed in sufficient quantities through food, supplementation can be beneficial and measurably help improve supply.
A sensible choice is based not on marketing but on clear criteria. The first question is whether there is a real deficiency risk, for example limited sun exposure requiring vitamin D or a vegan diet requiring vitamin B12. Then comes the question of dosage: more is not better and can even have consequences – particularly with fat-soluble vitamins or minerals.
Equally relevant are form and absorption. Magnesium should be well tolerated, calcium sensibly dosed, omega-3 as purified oil. Secondary plant compounds, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C and zinc can also provide targeted support, provided they are correctly dosed.
Natural dietary supplements from plants are not automatically safer – natural substances can also be overdosed.
Dietary supplements should always be clearly listed, transparently labelled and free from unnecessary blends. High-quality products clearly state what they contain, in what quantity and what they can contribute to – such as "contributes to normal immune system function" or "maintenance of normal muscle function".
Buying or ordering dietary supplements online is convenient: product comparison, current price in CHF, shipping, Swiss Made and fast delivery. However, this is precisely where risks lurk. Exaggerated promises or enticing offers without transparent information are warning signs.
In Switzerland, dietary supplements are subject to food law and the ordinance of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO). They may be placed on the market provided the information is correct. These rules protect customers but do not replace your own checks.
Important when buying:
The price in CHF should never be more important than quality and correct labelling.
Most people benefit not from mega-doses but from targeted supply of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other micronutrients. Particularly relevant are vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, magnesium, iron, zinc, omega-3 and calcium – depending on diet, physical demands and lifestyle.
These substances contribute to the normal function of the immune system, muscles, bones and nervous system and can meaningfully support health. Blood values, diet and physical demands help identify the right products.
Taking dietary supplements should always be planned. They provide nutrients but do not replace a healthy diet. Key factors are taking them in sufficient quantities, correct timing and a suitable form such as tablets, capsules, powder or oil.
Practical principles:
Especially during pregnancy, when taking medication or with pre-existing conditions: caution with self-medication. Dietary supplements for women wishing to conceive should be chosen with particular care.
